Protecting Your Skin: A Simple Monthly Routine That Could Save Your Life
When was the last time you looked closely at your skin? Not just a quick glance in the mirror—but a full-body check, head to toe?
At Omega Physicians, we believe in prevention as the best medicine. And when it comes to skin cancer—especially melanoma, the deadliest form—early detection can truly save lives. That's why we encourage all our patients to perform a monthly self-skin exam.
The Power of a 10-Minute Habit
Skin cancer is more common than many people realize. In fact, 1 in 5 Americans will develop it by age 70. But here's the good news: when detected early, even melanoma has a high treatment success rate.
Taking just 10 minutes once a month to examine your skin can make all the difference. All you need is a well-lit room, a full-length mirror, and a hand mirror. Use a comb or hairdryer to inspect your scalp, and don't forget those easy-to-miss areas like your back, underarms, and the soles of your feet.
What to Look For
During your self-exam, ask yourself:
- Are there any new spots or moles?
- Has an existing mole changed in size, shape, or color?
- Do you have a sore that doesn't heal or bleeds easily?
- Do you notice any area that looks distinctly different from the rest? (This is known as the "ugly duckling" sign.)
- Are there any patches that are itchy, scaly, or painful?
If you answer yes to any of these, it's time to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider.
Skin Health is Year-Round
Don't wait for summer to think about sun safety. Make sunscreen a part of your daily routine—yes, even on cloudy days. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and reapply regularly when outdoors.
And remember: a monthly self-check doesn't replace an annual professional exam. Seeing a provider once a year ensures that any suspicious changes are caught early.
